A Virginia man fired a flare gun indoors more than 30 times before his house exploded, authorities say.

The bizarre incident occurred in Arlington, where police on Monday responded to a report of gunfire coming from inside a residence, according to the Arlington County Police Department. When they arrived, they found that homeowner James Yoo had fired a flare gun “30 to 40 times,” an incident report reveals. Officers obtained a search warrant and attempted to enter the home – but Yoo barricaded himself and fired several more rounds, police say. Then, just more than three hours after officers first arrived on the scene, the house exploded. Yoo was killed in the blast, police say.

At least 10 other homes were affected by the explosion, although police have not revealed how badly they were damaged. Investigators have not yet determined what prompted Yoo to fire the flare gun, or what caused his house to explode, a rep says.
