Australian billionaire Tim Gurner isn't going to win any Boss of the Year trophies for his latest comments about the work force.

Gurner, founder and CEO of the Gurner Group, told the Australian Financial Review that workers have grown "arrogant" and no longer want to work as much.

He said he wanted to see the unemployment rate rise to "40 to 50 percent" to create some "pain in the economy", adding "We need to remind people that they work for the employer, not the other way around."

He believed mass layoffs would result in "less arrogance in the employment market".
