A San Francisco man is fighting for his life after he fell off a pier and ended up submerged beneath 16 feet of water, authorities say.

The accident occurred Tuesday at 10 a.m. while the unidentified man was collecting cans from the Torpedo Wharf, which is east of Fort Point, says San Francisco Fire Captain Jonathan Baxter. Witnesses who saw the man fall from the pier called authorities after they didn’t see him resurface, Baxter says.

Although rescue crews were able to find the man, he was underwater for at least 50 minutes before they pulled him out, Baxter says. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he’s currently listed in critical condition, officials say.
