It turns out a Florida man who was trying to break the record for the longest time spent underwater without depressurization has already reached his goal – but he still refuses to resurface.

University Professor Joseph Dituri, who goes by the name “Mr. Deep Sea,” has been living in an underwater capsule at the bottom of a 30-foot-deep Key Largo lagoon for 74 days – which tops the previous record of 73 days, two hours and 34 minutes. Yet despite having broken the record, Dituri says he’s got more experiments to perform – and he’s not coming out for at least 26 more days.

"The record is a small bump and I really appreciate it," says Dituri, who works for the University of South Florida. "I'm honored to have it, but we still have more science to do." Among his experiments: Determining how the human body reacts to long-term exposure to extreme pressure. "The idea here is to populate the world's oceans, to take care of them by living in them and really treating them well," Dituri says.
