Deputies, Corrections Officers Banned From Off-Duty Work At Bars

(Cleveland) - For years, it has been allowable for police officers to make some extra money by doing off-duty work, such as security. However, this weekend's fatal shooting of an off-duty Cuyahoga County corrections officer has put that side gig on hold for the county's deputy sheriffs and corrections officers.

Cuyahoga County Sheriff Christopher Viland issued an order, obtained by cleveland.com, saying for now, deputies and corrections officers cannot work off-duty jobs where the facility has a liquor license, including bars, restaurants, grocery stores, and sports arenas.

Corrections officer Tim Cruz was working as a bouncer at Rookie's Sports Bar at Pearl and Ridge Roads in Parma on Saturday morning when he was shot to death. Two brothers who had been told to leave the bar earlier have been arrested and charged with the death of Cruz and a bar patron.
