(Cleveland) - RTA is considering expanding eastward. A study is underway which could lead to extending the Red Line and/or the Healthline through Collinwood and East Cleveland, into the Euclid and possibly Lake County.
RTA General Manager Joe Calabrese says transit ridership is up in Greater Cleveland as well as nationwide. He tells Newsradio WTAM 1100 that an increasing number of commuters are looking to save money by leaving their vehicles at home.
Calabrese contends young adults are not as auto-oriented as previous generations, and that 26% of millennials don't even have driver’s licenses.
To keep up with demand, RTA is in the process of making new upgrades. Calabrese reports, 3 rail stations are currently under construction on the east side, and they have a project underway on Clifton Boulevard.
Public meetings have already been held on the possible eastward expansion, however cost estimates could range into the tens of millions of dollars.
