(Columbus) – The question now is, “How did it happen?”

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is now investigating how Ariel Castro was able to kill himself at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient.

Castro was found hanging in his cell at about 9:20 last night. Prison staff performed CPR before he was taken to the OSU Wexner Medical Center in Columbus and pronounced dead just before 11:00pm.

Castro was being held at Orient temporarily until the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections decided where to send him to serve out his sentence of life in prison plus 1,000 years.

Castro was being held in an isolated cell with guards checking on him every 30 minutes. Between checks he was able to hang himself.

It's the second suicide of an inmate in a month. Death row inmate Billy Slagle hanged himself just days before his scheduled execution.

Both cases were out of Cuyahoga County.
