(Elyria) - Leaders in Lorain County have declared a state of emergency stemming from last Monday's storms where the county believes more than 25 homes or businesses suffered extensive storm damage.
Lorain County Emergency Management Agency Director Tom Kelly says the criteria include 18 inches of flood water in a living space or bedroom or structural damage to a basement of a home or business.
Federal and state inspectors will be in town next Wednesday to look over the damage to determine if those affected are eligible for financial assistance including low interest small business loans.
Kelly says the National Weather Service believes this was the type of storm that hits roughly once every 500 years.
Some parts of the county received six inches of rain over 24 hours including five inches that fell in just three hours.
