A construction job boom in Greater Cleveland

Posted July 30th, 2014 @ 12:12pm

(Cleveland) - Associated General Contractors of America announced today that Greater Cleveland is experiencing a boom in construction jobs.

Chief Economist Ken Simonson said 5,300 new construction jobs were created Northeast Ohio between June of 2013 and June of 2014.

He told Newsradio WTAM 1100, "That's more than 8 other metro areas in the nation, and the best showing Cleveland has had in decades."

Simonson credited continuing work on the Innerbelt Bridge project, new hotel, apartment, and retail construction downtown.

However, Simonson warned the boom may not last, with Congress failing to increase infrastructure spending. He's also concerned that lawmakers may not fully replenish the Highway Trust Fund is nearly empty.

He believes Greater Cleveland may be able to sustain this level of construction work for the next 2 years.
